What is Legionella?

Legionella bacteria live in water and can cause Legionellosis, which is a collective term for diseases caused by legionella bacteria including the most serious legionnaires’ disease, as well as the similar but less serious conditions of Pontiac fever and Lochgoilhead fever.

What is Legionnaires’ disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and everyone is susceptible to infection. The risk increases with age, but some people are at higher risk including:

  • People over the age of 45
  • Smokers and heavy drinkers
  • People suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease, diabetes, lung or heart disease
  • Anyone with an impaired immune system

.

How do you control legionella bacteria?

If conditions are suitable, the bacteria may develop and thrive within a water system, thus increasing the risks of Legionnaires’ disease. It is therefore important to control the risks by introducing appropriate measures outlined in ACoP – L8 Legionnaires’ disease – The Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems[and the technical guidance in HSG274. This guidance gives clear instructions on controlling and managing the risks associated with legionella bacteria in water systems.

How can we help?

We can help you every step of the way. Firstly, a legionella bacteria risk assessment will be undertaken, which identifies any potential risks with your water system. Once the risks have been identified, we can offer ongoing control services such as water temperature monitoring, sampling, inspections, cleaning and disinfection. We can create all of the necessary paperwork and documentation to enable you to comply with the guidance issued by the HSE on the control of legionella bacteria.
